Bill proposes fine for those who smoke in cars with minors

OLYMPIA, Wash. — A measure proposed in the state Legislature would make it a traffic infraction to smoke while in a car with minors.

Lawmakers in Olympia are hearing public testimony on Tuesday afternoon in the House Transportation Committee.

Under House Bill 2086, smokers who light up a cigarette, pipe or cigar in a moving or parked car with a minor inside could be subject to fines.

The bill says the traffic infraction would not become part of the driver's record or be available to insurance companies or employers.

The first violation would be a $125 penalty, and violations afterward would be $250.
