Everett police to conduct monthly active shooter training sessions

EVERETT, Wash. — Police in Everett are taking steps for an active shooter scenario.

Starting this month, they're running monthly training sessions at the Everett Mall.

Recent events like the Burlington Mall shooting reinforce why officers want to be ready.

Everett police say they can never be too prepared for when they get a call.

Police in Olympia have been conducting similar active shooter scenarios over the past year.

Using fire and police personnel and working during normal business hours, they're trying to recreate as realistically as possible the exact situations they could face.

Police haven’t had to look far for real-life examples. It was only in September when a gunman entered the Burlington Mall and killed five people in a matter of minutes.

Police hope by running these scenarios once a month, they can be ready to respond at a moment's notice.

The first session will happen Monday or Tuesday and police are letting people know to not be concerned if they see lots of activity here.
