Woman killed in Burien hit-and-run

BURIEN, Wash. — A woman was struck and killed in a Burien hit-and-run on Friday evening, deputies said.

The incident happened in front of Highline High School at 225 South 152nd Street at about 6:45 p.m.

Deputies said the woman died at the scene.

After 9 p.m., deputies released a suspect vehicle description. They are looking for a newer silver or gray sedan, that should have right front damage.

The incident happened outside the Highline Performing Arts Center, where St. Francis of Assisi held its school musical, "Annie Jr.," Friday night.

A parent who came to see the show did not want to give her name but said that she pulled up just as someone was giving the grandmother CPR.

“As far as I can tell, they were crossing the street in the sidewalk, from the parking lot across the street. And it was just a hit and run,” she said.

She said the woman’s grandson was watching anxiously from the sidewalk.

“He was just shaking. So I stayed with him for a while until the principal came,” she said.

A King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said investigators are still trying to determine the exact spot the woman was hit. There is a crosswalk near the place where investigators were placing markers on the scene Friday night.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as 73-year-old April Fait.

Neighbors told KIRO 7 they have been concerned with the safety of South 152nd for a long time.

“People just speed. There are semis up and down this road where there’s not supposed to be,” said Jodie Martinez. “I suggest they put speed bumps on the road.”

Martinez, who has lived in the area for 19 years, said her son went to Highline High School. She now tells her younger child to try not to even venture out on that road.

“That’s someone’s family,” she said. “It’s sad, that you know, somebody has to suffer for this.”
