Woman with young daughter in car shot by stranger in Renton

RENTON, Wash. — Police are investigating after a Tri-Cities woman was shot in the leg Wednesday night in Renton while her young daughter was with her in the car.

The shooting happened at about 9:20 p.m. as she was about to drive away from the Popeyes restaurant at 105 Southwest Seventh Street.

Police said the 22-year-old woman, her 3-year-old daughter and a companion were backing out of the parking lot after eating when a woman walked up and fired about six gunshots at the car before running away.

The victims then drove to a nearby Walmart parking lot and called for help.

The woman was shot in the leg, but her daughter and the companion were not hurt.

A Renton police K-9 unit arrived and tracked the suspect, a 32-year-old woman, to a nearby location where she was arrested. A gun was found in her pocket.

The suspect refused to talk to officers.  The motive for the shooting is not known, but police say it appears the suspect and victim did not know each other.

The victim was taken to Valley Medical Center with a non-life-threatening wound.

The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for suspicion of assault.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Renton Police Department.
