Fallen Seattle firefighters honored for heroism, sacrifice

SEATTLE — The Seattle Fire Department honored six of their own who are among the 95 firefighters across the nation who died in the line of duty in 2017.

The firefighters, Stephen Lohr, Jess Hernandez, Wallace F. Goulet, Joshua Milton, Tristan Smith and Scott Steed will have their names added to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Seattle’s Occidental Square, where the ceremony was held.

Rich in firefighter tradition, the ceremony began and ended with the presentation of colors by the Walter Kilgore Memorial Honor Guard.

Music was played by the Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums band, and speeches were made by fire and city officials as well as presidents of the Seattle Firefighters Union and the Seattle Fire Chiefs Association.

The Seattle Fallen Firefighters Memorial, which honors all Seattle firefighters who have died in the line of duty, was inspired by the four firefighters who died in the 1995 Mary Pang Warehouse fire.

The local ceremony coincided with the 36th Annual National Fallen Firefighter Memorial weekend held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

During the weekend, firefighters from around the country pay tribute to firefighters who sacrificed their lives.
