Body of backcountry skier found buried in avalanche near Crystal Mountain

The body of a 64-year-old woman was found near Crystal Mountain on Thursday morning.

According to officials at the ski resort, a member of the Crystal Mountain Ski Patrol spotted avalanche debris and noticed a backpack and what appeared to be a partially buried person who was nonresponsive.

Ski Patrol and avalanche rescue dogs searched the area, and the woman’s body was found before 11 a.m.

According to officials, it appears the woman was ski-touring alone in the backcountry when she triggered the avalanche. Also, it appears that she was traveling uphill when the avalanche happened.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased skier,” said Kim Kircher, Ski Patrol Director.  “This hits close to home as she was a well-known skier in our community," she added.

The name of the skier has not been released.

Officials are reminding skiers to always go with a partner and carry proper equipment.
