REDMOND, Wash. — A man has been arrested in a violent attack on a woman at Redmond’s Marymoor Park last summer.
King County Sheriff’s Office detectives said a DNA match led to the identification of the suspect.
The Aug. 5 attack happened as the victim was walking her dog on a trail. Police said a man came out of some bushes, grabbed the woman and pulled her back into the wooded area.
The attacker then punched the woman repeatedly as she fought back and screamed. According to investigators, he told the woman he was going to kill her.
The attacker fled when a man walking nearby heard the victim screaming for help and went to investigate.
The woman had severe injuries to her face and a broken arm.
Police said they believed the attack was sexually motivated.
In August investigators believed the suspect could be a transient. They also said he left his shoes behind, after trying to strangle the woman with his shoe laces.
Investigators tested that evidence for DNA and announced today they had a match.
"I can tell you he has been in custody for some times. That's one thing I can tell you, which is good news. We don't believe there's been any other victim's so that's good too,” said King County Sheriff's Sgt Cindi West.
The King County Prosecutor's Office requested that no further information be released while the investigation continues.
At the Marymoor Park Off-Leash area the sketch of the suspect is still posted. People who use the dog park told KIRO-7 they'd heard about the attack and were relieved to find out he'd been caught.
"That's really good he's not out there anymore and isn't going to be a threat anymore, " said Anna Smith who brings her dog, Jackson, to the park.
Szidonia Pusok visits the park a few times a week and said she'll feel more safe knowing there's been an arrest. "Especially when you're by yourself and there's not many people and you go to the end section where it's more secluded," said Szidonia Pusok.
