Ferries: Temporary sailing schedule coming along with more changes at Colman Dock

SEATTLE — Ferry riders should be prepared for the next phase of major construction at Colman Dock in Seattle.

The 53-year-old terminal, which is vulnerable to earthquakes, is being replaced.

Starting Saturday, the southern slip will be closed to pour concrete on a new pedestrian walkway and all ferries will be using the central slip.

All Bremerton and Bainbridge Island sailings will be on a temporary schedule from Saturday to Monday, July 13 to 15.

Riders should plan ahead.  Here’s what the Washington State Department of Transportation says to expect:

  • Walk-on and drive-on riders: Departure times will be different from all three terminals: Seattle, Bremerton and Bainbridge Island. Check the temporary schedule in advance.
  • Add extra travel time to your trip: Crossing times could be longer when the single slip is occupied.
  • Weekday drive-on commuters: There will be fewer PM sailings on Monday, July 15, and vehicle waiting space will be even more limited. Consider working from home or walking on the ferry, or add plenty of extra travel time.
  • Weekend drive-on riders: If departing from Colman Dock between 1 and 8 p.m., plan to arrive up to 60 minutes before your sailing.

The next big change will come in August when the current passenger terminal building will close.

The first section of the new smaller terminal building will open in early August. WSDOT says the temporary Marion Street Bridge and the elevated walkways that connect the bridge to the new terminal building will open at the same time.

The existing terminal building will then close and be demolished.

To help keep riders aware of major changes coming to the dock, WSDOT is offering drop-in sessions from July 9 to 25.  Staff from the Colman Dock project will be available at each session to answer questions about construction, the temporary sailing schedule, and walk-on access changes.  View the dates and times for the sessions at this link:  http://bit.ly/CDockSummer
