Expansion joint work to close I-5 lanes this weekend

TUKWILA, Wash. — Drivers planning to use northbound Interstate 5 in Tukwila this weekend should expect delays and extra traffic this weekend and the next.

Northbound I-5 across the Duwamish River Bridge will be reduced to two lanes Friday night through late Sunday while crews replace hardware in an expansion joint that broke last fall.

During this weekend’s closure, crews contracted by the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace metal on the right half of the expansion joint, then transfer to the left half during the second weekend, so that two lanes can be kept open during the work.

This weekend’s work will run from 10 p.m. Friday, March 15, to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, March 17:

  • The three right lanes of northbound I-5 between the I-405/State Route 518 interchange and MLK Jr. Way will be closed.
    • Southbound I-405 HOV only.
    • Southcenter Boulevard.
    • Interurban Avenue South.

The following weekend, Friday, March 22, through Sunday, March 24, will have the same schedule and closures, Friday through Sunday, except the three left lanes of northbound I-5 in the same area will be closed.
