Hunt underway for killer of Federal Way teen

They came, many of them strangers, bearing gifts in memory of 16-year-old Wesley Gennings, a standout athlete at Decatur High School.

Gennings was shot and killed in a busy shopping mall parking lot Saturday night.

Many of those who came said they didn't know Gennings.

"But I feel for this boy and his family," said Edith Marie John, a member of the Puyallup tribe.  "And that's why I'm here.  To show my respect and that I care, even though I don't know him."

Federal Way police say the teen was found sitting behind the wheel of his car, dead from a gunshot wound.

Eyewitnesses described seeing two men in their late teens or early 20s get out of the car and walk away. But the description of them is so vague, detectives are appealing to the public for help.

"We only had a small number of phone calls on it," said Federal Way Police Commander Brett Hatfield. "We've obviously received some follow up, telephone calls from people. We can use all the help we can get."

Gennings was an only child. His mother's boyfriend said he last saw the teen Saturday night.

"He drove off," said Charles McLemore. "Twenty minutes later, his mother was going to the store.  She knocked on the door."

She told him she had seen her son's car surrounded by crime scene tape.  When they got there, they received the news.

"Whoever killed him, needs to be off the streets," said McLemore. "You know, if he killed him, he'll kill me. He'll kill you. These days kids don't have no conscience."

Federal Way police said this is not a random shooting.

Genning's mother is planning a vigil Sunday night. It is to start at her apartment and end at the crime scene.

Mayor of Federal Way Jim Ferrell released a statement on Genning's death on Sunday:

"The shooting of a teenage boy last night was a tragedy and I send my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and schoolmates at Decatur High School. Far too often, communities across our country are faced with these types of devastating crimes."
