ROBINSON, Texas — A group of volunteer firefighters went above and beyond the call of duty, spending their evening helping an elderly woman with her yard.

On Friday, a caller informed the Robinson Volunteer Fire Department that there was a woman trying to mow her lawn while using a cane, firefighters explained in a Facebook post.

“It was extremely hot on Friday evening, and I immediately knew we had to do something to help this lady out,” Les Avant, the firefighter who took the call, told KWTX. “I think it’s really indicative of first responders in general — police, fire, EMS — we try to help when we can.”

The firefighters immediately began making phone calls to coordinate who was available, and what equipment could be used. Within hours, eight firefighters had mowers and weed eaters and were doing a full makeover on “Miss Linda’s” yard, KWTX reported.

Photos included with the fire department’s Facebook post show the volunteers on mowers and working in the garden, as Miss Linda looks on.

“She didn’t want us helping her, she said this is her exercise time and she does a little bit at a time,” Avant told KWTX. “It took some coercion for us to say, ‘Hey, let us do this for you.’”

The Facebook post got lots of attention, and the fire department hopes it leads to more good deeds in the community.

“We hope something like this just keeps spurring on, and grows and grows and grows, and more of the community gets together and realizes these are our grandparents, these are people that raised us out here that need our help,” Luke Rawlings, the department’s president, told KWTX.

The fire department told KWTX that it has been hearing from others in the community who also want to help Miss Linda, including someone who has offered to redo her driveway.
