Authorities told the Bangor Daily News that the homeowner called authorities after seeing a deer balancing on top of her swimming pool cover. When she tried to pull the deer toward the edge of the pool by pulling on the cover, it jumped into the water, the newspaper reported.

In a post shared by police, she said the incident started after she shooed a deer away from shrubs in her front yard. After the deer fell into the water, she called 911 for help.

After Denning arrived at the home, she grabbed the catch pole kept in her cruiser, which is usually used to wrangle stray dogs, the Daily News reported.

“I just hooked the deer around the neck — and I know it looks bad, but I promise the deer is fine,” Denning told the Daily News, adding that the deer ran off into the woods after it was freed and seemed to be fine.

“We see everything, so we’re just happy to help when we can,” she said.
