Toddler accidentally shoots himself with unsecured gun in Florida home, police say

JUPITER INLET COLONY, Fla. — A toddler remains hospitalized after he shot himself with an unsecured gun in a Florida home, Jupiter Inlet Colony police said.

According to WPBF and WPEC, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at a Lighthouse Drive home. A 3-year-old boy discovered an unsecured 9 mm gun, which discharged, striking his hand and thigh, WPEC reported.

Rescue crews flew the child to a nearby hospital, where his condition was listed as stable, according to WPBF. Doctors expect him to recover from his injuries, the news outlets reported.

The gun belonged to the toddler’s uncle, according to WPEC. No further information was immediately available.
