JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. — Police say a 12-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed his mother accidentally over the weekend in Alabama and tried to cover up what happened.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that on Saturday just after midnight, deputies were called out to a house. When they arrived, they found Ayobiyi Cook, 29, dead.
According to CBS News, investigators determined that Cook’s 12-year-old son had accidentally discharged a firearm that struck and killed his mother.
JCSO said the boy had originally “fabricated a story” that detectives were able to determine was impossible. Eventually, the boy admitted to what happened. According to JCSO, the evidence from the scene supported that the shooting was “unintentional” and that the Family Court system will handle the offense.
The boy will remain with his family, who has been cooperating with investigators, according to CBS News.
No further information has been released.
