Pittsburgh Steelers’ Jarron Jones accused of assaulting, strangling woman

PITTSBURGH — Authorities on Saturday arrested Jarron Jones, an offensive lineman on the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad, on charges including aggravated assault and strangulation, WPXI reported.

In a statement obtained by the news station, Kevin Colbert, general manager of the Steelers, said the team is “aware of the situation regarding Jarron Jones.”

“We are gathering all of the details of these disturbing allegations, but we will not comment any further at this time,” Colbert said.

Jones, 26, is accused of attacking his girlfriend at an Airbnb in Pittsburgh’s Crawford-Roberts neighborhood, WPXI reported, citing a criminal complaint. The woman told police that Jones strangled her, hit her in the face, smashed a video game console over her head and “threw her outside.” She said that at one point during the altercation, she lost consciousness, WPXI reported.

Police said they saw abrasions on the woman’s face and chest and bruising on her arm. She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where she was last listed in stable condition, according to WPXI.

Jones told police that he and his girlfriend had gone out earlier in the evening but that she came home after him. He said she began “breaking items in the apartment and yelling,” so he said he picked her up and “placed her outside,” WPXI reported.

The Steelers signed Jones as a free agent in April after he spent a shortened XFL season with the New York Guardians, though ESPN reported he failed to make the team’s 53-man roster. He signed on to the Steelers' practice squad last month.
