Philippines earthquake: 1 dead, several hurt in 6.8-magnitude temblor, officials say

MANILA — At least one person is dead and several others are recovering from injuries after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines on Sunday, officials said.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the massive temblor, which occurred at 2:11 p.m. local time, was centered about 3.7 miles south of Magsaysay. The quake also prompted several aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 5.7, the agency said on its website.

The New York Times reported that a wall collapsed in Matanao, killing a 6-year-old girl, Mayor Vincent Fernandez said. The quake left at least 15 other people wounded and several buildings damaged, according to the newspaper.

In Padada, several people were believed to be trapped in a three-story building that collapsed, officials told The Associated Press.
