Officials: Man allegedly killed wife, parents while 4 children were at school in New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A man allegedly killed his wife and his parents while his four children were in school, officials say.

According to The Associated Press, deputies with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office arrived at an outdoor range in Newstead near Buffalo, New York, on Thursday. Deputies found the bodies of Erik Bergum and his father, Mark Bergum, who had been at the shooting range when his son arrived and joined him, according to ECSO in a news conference per the AP.

ECSO a news release on Facebook said that the incident was believed to be an apparent murder-suicide.

During their investigation, deputies discovered the bodies of Erik’s wife, Mary Beth Bergum, and his mother, Nancy Bergum, at two different houses in Clarence, New York, according to ECSO in a news conference per the AP.

ECSO in the news release said that detectives are working with the crime scene investigation unit at a total of three scenes.

ECSO said the children were at school during the incidents, according to the AP.

According to the AP, Erik allegedly left a note in his car that stated he had planned the shooting spree but did not provide a motive. Investigators believe Erik first shot his wife and then shot his mother at her house. He then allegedly went to the shooting range. He then shot and killed his father before killing himself.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information has been released.
