The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that deputies were called to an area near Washington Boulevard and Highway 140 in Livingston, California, after a report of trespassing. Once deputies arrived to the area, they spoke with the victim who told them that people were stealing watermelons from his fields.

MCSO identified the suspects as Erick Vasquez and Brayan Vasquez Buenrostro.

According to KMPH, deputies stopped the driver and occupant of a car that was seen leaving the field. A search of the car reveals 57 watermelons in the trunk and back seat.

Vasquez was wearing an ankle monitor on at the time of his arrest, according to KMPH. MCSO said it was part of a “pre-trial electronic monitoring program.”

All of the watermelons were returned to the victim, MCSO said.

No further information has been released.
