NFL player Richard Sherman released from jail

SEATTLE — Authorities released former Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers player Richard Sherman from jail Thursday afternoon, one day after he was booked on a domestic violence charge after police said he tried to break into his in-law’s house in Redmond, according to records from the King County Correctional Facility.

On Thursday, King County District Court Judge Fa’amomoi Masaniai ordered Sherman released without bail, calling him a “pillar of the community” and noting that his arrest Wednesday was his first, The Associated Press reported. Prosecutors had asked for bail to be set at $10,000, according to the AP.

In a statement posted Friday on Instagram, Sherman said that he was “deeply remorseful” for the situation.

“I behaved in a manner I am not proud of,” he wrote. “I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need.”

Authorities arrested Sherman early Wednesday after police said he crashed his SUV into a construction site near Seattle and then tried to force his way into his in-law’s home. Officials said he had earlier left his house in Maple Valley after drinking heavily and talking about killing himself.

In police reports, officers described Sherman as argumentative and agitated when they spotted him outside of the home in Redmond around 1:45 a.m. Video shared with police by Raymond Moss, Sherman’s father-in-law, showed the 33-year-old backing away from the home before lowering his shoulder and launching himself at the door multiple times.

“The family began to yell in fear,” he said in a statement to police. “I used pepper spray on Sherman’s face through the partially opened door as he was still banging and attempting to gain entry. I told him to stop. I armed myself with my handgun at this time fearing for the safety of myself and my family.”

Police said they attempted to deescalate the situation, taking extra precautions due to Sherman’s size and strength as a professional football player, but Sherman became agitated after an officer told him that he was under arrest for burglary domestic violence. A brief struggle ensued before officers could cuff the 33-year-old, according to police reports. During the scuffle, a police K-9 bit Sherman’s left foot, leaving him with a cut which needed to be stitched.

Sherman was taken to a hospital for treatment of his wound and transported to jail.

Officials with Washington State Patrol, who are investigating the SUV crash, said he showed “obvious” signs of impairment. Sherman’s wife, Ashley, also told police that her husband was on antidepressants and had been getting help for mental health issues.

In a statement obtained Wednesday by the AP, Ashley Sherman said she loves and supports her husband.

“I am committed to helping Richard get the support and care that he needs,” she said in the statement. “Richard has always been a loving father and husband. And we are looking forward to seeing him at home with his family.”

Richard Sherman became one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks while playing for seven seasons for the Seahawks, beginning in 2011, KIRO-TV reported. In 2018, he left for a three-year deal with the 49ers. He completed his third season with the team last year and has since become a free agent, according to KIRO.
