CHIMAYO, N.M. — A New Mexico mother and father are facing charges in connection with the death of their 1-month-old baby boy, authorities said.
According to the Albuquerque Journal and KRQE, 22-year-old Steven Serrano Sr. and 19-year-old Athena Savell, both of Chimayo, face one count each of intentional child abuse leading to death. Although Rio Arriba sheriff’s deputies arrested Serrano on Thursday, jail records did not show Savell in custody, the Journal reported Monday.
Deputies responded to the couple’s home Wednesday afternoon to find the baby unresponsive, the news outlets reported. The child, who was not breathing, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, authorities said.
According to KRQE, Serrano later told deputies that he had put a pillow on top of the baby’s face because the child was crying.
