Memphis Grizzlies set NBA record for largest margin of victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies set an NBA record for margin of victory on Thursday night, crushing the Oklahoma Thunder 152-79.

The Grizzlies’ 73-point victory margin broke the previous mark of 68, set by the Cleveland Cavaliers, who defeated the Miami Heat 148-80 on Dec. 17, 1991, ESPN reported.

The all-time record for most points scored by one team in an NBA game is 186, set on Dec. 13, 1983. by the Detroit Pistons, who defeated the Denver Nuggets 186-184 in triple overtime.

On Thursday night, nine of the Grizzlies’ 12 players scored in double figures. Memphis was led by Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 27 points. De’Anthony Melton came off the bench to score 19 points for the Grizzlies.

“Man, it feels great. It feels great to be in the history books, especially in front of our home crowd,’’ Melton told reporters after the game. “And we did it one through 15. Everybody contributed, everybody played hard and we all got to get in the game. So, it’s always a blessing.

“We knew with (Ja Morant) going down what we had to do,’’ Melton said. “We had to step up.’’

Memphis led 72-36 at halftime and continued to score in the second half, leading by 78 points at one stage of the game.

The Grizzlies set a franchise record for shooting, converting 62.5% of their shots, ESPN reported.

In addition to Melton, other players coming off the bench to score included Santi Aldama with 18 points and John Konchar with 17.

“Tonight is not necessarily who we are,’’ Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault told reporters. “I think we’ve definitely shown that from a competitive standpoint. This isn’t indicative of who our team is.’’
