Man turns Christmas trees into canes for veterans

A man in Texas has come up with a way to make sure veterans are not forgotten, while also helping the environment.

It’s called Canes for Veterans Central Texas and Jamie Willis uses scrap wood to make canes for veterans for free, CBS News reported.

Willis served in the Army but was disabled. About four years ago, he needed a cane and asked for help from Free Canes for Veterans. The group was out of canes, but its leader, Oscar Morris, showed Willis how to make one, according to CBS News.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Now Willis is taking Christmas trees that are destined for the trash after the holidays, along with other wood picked up from his neighborhood, to create canes for those who really need them, CNN reported.

Donations have been growing with more than 1,500 trees being given to Willis this year.

Since he started making them, he and his volunteers have made 222 canes, CBS News reported.
