Louisiana clerk accused of stealing $4K from village’s traffic tickets, skating rink funds

SUN, La. — The head clerk for a tiny Louisiana village is accused of stealing more than $4,700 in public money from traffic fines and a skating rink owned by the town, authorities said.

Virginia Marie Bays, 61, who works for the village of Sun, was arrested Friday and charged with theft, malfeasance and injuring public records, NOLA.com reported. Bays was being held in the St. Tammany Parish jail, with bail set at $15,000, according to online booking records.

According to NOLA.com, Sun Mayor William Talley discovered in August that money totaling $4,705.95 was missing. Talley worked with the sheriff’s office finance crimes unit to investigate, the website reported.

That led to Bays' arrest. Detectives said Bay admitted stealing the money over several months and removing copies of traffic citations from the office to conceal the thefts, NOLA.com reported.

Sun has a population of 335 people, the website reported.
