Highland Park parade shooting: Celebrities, athletes react after 6 killed at July Fourth event

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — Six people died and dozens of others were wounded after a gunman opened fire on a Fourth of July parade from a rooftop in a Chicago suburb Monday, police said.

According to WMAQ-TV and the Chicago Sun-Times, the shooting occurred shortly after 10 a.m. CDT at the holiday parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Following an hourslong manhunt, police arrested a person of interest, 21-year-old Robert E. “Bobby” Crimo, in connection with the case, the news outlets reported.

Several celebrities and athletes with Highland Park ties took to social media to reflect on the incident and pay tribute to the victims. Here’s what they were saying:

Rachel Brosnahan

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan tweeted Monday that she “grew up in Highland Park,” according to E! News and People magazine.

“This parade is a highlight of the year for so many families,” wrote Brosnahan, 31. “I’m sick to my stomach every time news like this comes out, but I don’t wish the pit in your stomach as you call your family and friends to make sure everyone is okay on anyone. No words.”

Richard Marx

Singer Richard Marx echoed the sentiment, according to E! and People.

“I grew up in Highland Park,” the 58-year-old, known for ‘80s hits such as “Right Here Waiting” and “Satisfied,” tweeted Monday afternoon. “I’m actively reaching out to check on the welfare of people I still know there. My heart is always broken by these constant mass shootings no matter where they occur but today I’m extra heartbroken. And extra angry at the senselessness.”

Ken Olin

Actor Ken Olin, best known for his role in “Thirtysomething,” recalled watching the parade when he was a child, according to The Wrap.

“My hometown. I went to this parade every year as a little boy,” the 67-year-old tweeted. “My heart breaks for all the children in our country who will grow up afraid of celebrating with a mass of happy people.”

Darrynton Evans

Chicago Bears running back and return specialist Darrynton Evans also took to Twitter in the wake of the shooting, E! reported.

“Prayers up for the the community of Highland Park ... just sad man,” the 23-year-old tweeted. “People can’t even enjoy a 4th of July Parade any more.”
