Happy birthday Meghan Markle! Royal family shares well wishes as Duchess of Sussex turns 39

Happy birthday to the Duchess of Sussex!

The British royal family took to social media Tuesday to celebrate the former Meghan Markle, who turns 39.

"Wishing the Duchess of Sussex a very happy birthday!" the royal family said in a post on its official social media accounts Tuesday. The family shared a photo from 2018 of the duchess and Queen Elizabeth II to mark the occasion.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife the former Kate Middleton, shared a photo of Meghan greeting a girl last year during a surprise visit with military families in Windsor, according to People.

"Wishing a very happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex today!" Meghan's brother- and sister-in-law wrote in a caption of the post.

"Happy Birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!" Meghan's father-in-law, Prince Charles, and her mother-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, said in a post on their official social media accounts.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told NBC News that Meghan plans to spend her birthday at home with her husband and their son, 1-year-old Archie.

Prince Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and sixth in line to the British throne, married Meghan, an American actress who grew up in Los Angeles, at Windsor Castle in 2018 in a posh ceremony watched around the world.

In January, the couple announced they planned to quit as senior royals, seek financial independence and move to North America. The split became official at the end of March. The family lived briefly in Canada before moving to Southern California.
