Firefighters battle 4-alarm blaze on San Francisco pier

SAN FRANCISCO — A four-alarm fire erupted at a warehouse on San Francisco’s waterfront early Saturday, with more than 100 firefighters rushing to Pier 45 to battle the blaze, KPIX reported.

The pier is located near San Francisco’s popular Fisherman’s Wharf and has several old warships moored nearby, the television station reported.

Update 10:40 a.m. EDT May 23: The San Francisco Fire Department first reported the fire around 4:23 a.m., KRON reported. Fire officials reported that part of the warehouse collapsed, the television station reported.

The SS Jeremiah O’Brien, one of two fully functioning Liberty ships that were launched during World War II, was saved, fire officials said.

“The fireboat St. Francis, San Francisco Fireboat 3, was put in position to protect the historic Jeremiah O’Brien vessel. The St. Francis, per my operations chief, saved the Jeremiah O’Brien vessel,” Lt. Jonathan Baxter told reporters.
