Up to 25 train cars were derailed Friday after a small bridge collapsed in central Iowa, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the derailment of the Union Pacific cars happened at about 5:30 a.m. CT, KCCI reported.
“Right now, we’re being told that a small bridge over a waterway gateway caused the mess,” Sgt. Ryan Evans, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, told reporters.

Union Pacific officials said the cars were carrying lumber, liquid petroleum gas, octane and soybean meal, according to WOI.
The bridge’s collapse forced roads to be closed for more than 10 hours, KCCI reported.
