Animal Rescue League officials save 58 cats, kittens hoarded in Iowa home

Animal officials said Thursday that they helped rescue 58 cats and kittens that were being hoarded in a northern Iowa home.

Officials from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa said its mobile response team traveled to Mitchell County to assist law enforcement officials, KCCI reported.

“When our team arrived, the smell of urine hit them immediately,” the organization said in a news release. “Cats and kittens were everywhere, and the house was dirty with urine and feces.”

The ARL also said nearly all of the rescued animals were suffering from mites, fleas and severe upper respiratory infections. One of the kittens died, KCCI reported.

Rescue officials said many of the surviving felines will be quarantined for several weeks due to ringworm, the television station reported.
