7 people shot, none fatally, at Milwaukee funeral home

MILWAUKEE — Seven people were shot at a Milwaukee funeral home Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

All seven victims were in stable condition at an area hospital, Acting Police Chief Michael Brunson told reporters. The victims are men and women and range in age between 24 and 48 years old, WTMJ reported.

According to police, at 12:45 p.m. a vehicle pulled up to a crowd of approximately 100 mourners gathering at Serenity Funeral Home and someone opened fire, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Cedric Guy, the owner of the funeral home, told the newspaper he was in another part of the building when he heard gunfire.

“Once we heard the shots we called 911,” Guy told the Journal Sentinel in a telephone interview. “We shut everything down. It just went crazy from there on.”

Brunson said there was no indication of what caused the shooting, and police continue to search for the shooter, WISN reported.

Guy said the service, which had been scheduled for 1 p.m., was for Braxton Taylor, 26, the victim of a homicide on Sept. 17, the Journal Sentinel reported. Taylor was found fatally shot, and his death remains unsolved, the newspaper reported.

The funeral was postponed after the shooting.

“Our prayers are with the victims and their family members during this terrible time,” Brunson said at a news conference. “This is an untenable situation. This brazen act that was done in broad daylight, is just unacceptable in our city.”

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett called the shooting insanity.

“It’s an example of the insanity we are seeing with the amount of guns, particularly illegal guns we are seeing in the city of Milwaukee," Barrett told reporters. "The insanity of people solving their problems with guns -- it is just completely insane, and we are seeing way too much of that in the community this year.
