4 deaths, 2 critical hospitalizations confirmed at Michigan music festival

LENAWEE COUNTY, Mich. — Michigan authorities are investigating four deaths connected to the Faster Horses Festival, including the suspected carbon monoxide poisoning of five men that killed three and left two in critical condition.

The three-day country music festival at the Michigan International Speedway opened Friday in Brooklyn and typically attracts roughly 40,000 festivalgoers per day, MLive.com reported.

The suspected carbon monoxide deaths occurred at a campground near the festival, where first responders found five unconscious men in their early 20s inside a camper, USA Today reported.

According to a news release issued by the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, three of the men were pronounced dead at the scene and two are being treated at an area hospital for acute carbon monoxide poisoning. A generator near the campsite is believed to be the source of the poisonings.

Meanwhile, Michigan State Police are also investigating the death of 30-year-old Melissa Donna Havens, whose body was found early Saturday. Investigators are attempting to determine the identity of a man in whose company Havens was seen within 24 hours of her body’s discovery, USA Today reported.

According to MLive.com, the man being sought was wearing a gray hoodie and is described as Black and in his 30s with a short beard and short black hair. Neither the manner nor cause of Havens’ death have been made public.
