Suspect identified in shooting at Central Florida high school

SANFORD, Fla. — Authorities took a 16-yeard-old Seminole High School student into custody Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of shooting an 18-year-old classmate on campus, prompting a lockdown, according to WFTV.

Update 11:18 p.m. EST Jan. 19: The Sanford Police Department identified the suspect in the shooting as 16-year-old Da’raveius Smith. He was charged with one count each of attempted first-degree murder premeditated, possession of a weapon on school property, firing a weapon on school property and disturbing the peace, WFTV-TV reported.

Update 3:45 p.m. EST Jan. 19: At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, police identified the suspect in the shooting at Seminole High School as a 16-year-old student, WFTV reported.

The student is accused of shooting an 18-year-old classmate three times near the school’s Tomahawk Building, according to WFTV. Investigators said the shooting appeared to have stemmed from an “isolated dispute” between the students, the news station reported.

According to WFTV, the injured student was in stable condition after Wednesday’s confrontation.

Original report: Ronny Neal with the Sanford Police Department told WFTV that around noon on Wednesday, a person shot a boy who attends Seminole High School. The incident happened inside the school, WFTV reported. Neal declined to immediately share more information about the suspect or the circumstances leading to the shooting.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that there was “no longer an active threat” at Seminole High School after officials initiated a code red lockdown on campus. Students were brought indoors and normal school activities were paused as part of the lockdown, WFTV reported.

“Students are safe and there is no current threat to the campus,” a school district spokesperson told WFTV in an email.

In a statement posted on Facebook, high school officials added that as of 1:30 p.m., the campus “will remain in lockdown until cleared by law enforcement.” They asked that parents avoid the campus as authorities continue working to clear the area.
