Mother charged after baby has 0.359 blood alcohol level

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A mother from Ohio is facing charges after her 3-month-old baby was taken to the hospital and had a blood-alcohol level that doctors said could have killed the child.

Davonna Reed took her daughter to Akron Children's Hospital when the little girl became sick last month, WJW reported.

Doctors found the infant had a blood alcohol content level of 0.359, police said, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

That's the equivalent of a 195-pound man drinking 14 beers in a single hour, police told the Beacon Journal.

Police said they found a bottle of 80-proof vodka that police said was mostly empty in the diaper bag carried by Reed, according to the newspaper.

Police said it could have been deadly for Reed's daughter.

A pediatric emergency physician at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's in Cleveland said that much alcohol in a child's system could have "significant effects," the Beacon Journal reported.

The alcohol can make the baby's body temperature and blood sugar levels drop, leading to seizure, coma and even death, Dr. Jerri Rose told the newspaper.

Reed originally told police she didn't know her daughter had ingested alcohol but said the 3-month-old baby was not being breastfed and could not lift the bottle herself, the Beacon Journal reported.

Police said Reed allowed the baby to ingest alcohol, WJW reported.

Reed has been charged with child endangering, the Beacon Journal reported.

She was being held in the county jail, WJW reported.

The baby was treated in the Natal Intensive Care Unit, WJW reported and was released under the supervision of Summit County Children Services, according to the Beacon Journal.
