The video has a heartbeat sound effect throughout as different scenes in the single-shot video shows incidents and audio of the police-involved shooting deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling.

There is also a reference to Trayvon Martin by a person in a black hoodie holding an Arizona iced tea and a pack of Skittles, which Martin was reported as having when he was shot by neighborhood vigilante George Zimmerman, whose 911 call audio is heard during the reference.

Nods to peaceful protests of Colin Kaepernick, Black Lives Matter activists and others are also seen, as well as audio of Malcolm X's "By any means necessary" speech at Organization of Afro-American Unity in New York in 1964.

Simone Shepherd, who also directed the video, made the video to capitalize on the viral craze and draw awareness to a cause that matters to her: racial profiling and police brutality.

"Black Lives Matter is an issue that's important to me," she told Time. "I felt that it was important to make sure that people didn't forget those moments using this very viral movement that's happening with the mannequin challenge."
