Police responded to reports of a person shot at the location at 2228 North Gettysburg Avenue around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The suspect, believed to be in his middle 20s, had a firearm when he entered the store and the clerk shot him after he demanded money, the sergeant said. There were customers shopping when the shooting occurred.

The suspect walked out and collapsed right outside the front doors. He was in possession of a gun, the sergeant said. The identity of the person shot has not been released. “I don’t know if [the clerk] followed him or shot from behind the counter,” the sergeant said.

What hasn’t been made clear is whether the robber brandished the weapon or simply told the clerk he had one. Also not clear is how many shots were fired in the store.

Schloss said the investigation is continuing as detectives are working to determine whether the suspect had anyone working with him.

Schloss did not identify the clerk by name.

He said the Dollar General stores have been hit hard this summer, but he was not aware of an overall uptick in violence associated with the stores or in the area of the store. The sergeant said he was not aware of the store's policies regarding employees being armed.
