5-year-old girl who survived gunshot wound to head gets birthday surprise from Detroit police

DETROIT — Detroit police surprised a girl who survived a gunshot wound to the head last year, giving the child a toy Polaris for her fifth birthday, WJBK reported.

London Muldrow was hit by a stray bullet in her brain April 7, 2018, after an argument between Exel Taylor, 24, and another man erupted into gunfire at a Detroit gas station, the Detroit News reported.

London was sitting in the back seat of the car as her mother, Laurice Henderson, pulled up to the station, the newspaper reported. The man was hiding behind Henderson's car when the bullet smashed through the windshield and hit the child, the News reported.

In September 2018, Taylor, 24, was sentenced to between 17 and 32 years for the shooting, the newspaper reported.

Detroit police Officer Eric Brown responded to the shooting and took London and Henderson to an area hospital, WJBK reported. London, who still has the bullet in her brain, spent 28 days in the hospital before she was released, the television station reported.

"He's been an amazing person for my family and I," Henderson told WJBK. "He helped save my daughter's life."

Brown stayed in touch with London and her family, and when he learned the girl was celebrating her fifth birthday over the Memorial Day weekend, he wanted to give the child a present.

"Myself and the rest of the 12 Precinct Special Operations came together and put together funds in order to get baby London a birthday present," Brown told WJBK. he said.

The toy was a hit.

"I like my new car," London said.

"They didn't have to call and reach out (asking) what does London need or want for her birthday," Henderson told WJBK. "I am grateful they called and even remembered her."
