Tacoma man shot by Portland police after allegedly robbing bank

PORTLAND — A Tacoma man is accused of robbing a bank and check-cashing business before being shot by Portland police.

Chase Peeples, 25, remains in the hospital and is expected to survive after the Oct. 25 confrontation. He is expected to appear in court after he is released from the hospital.

Police have not said what prompted them to shoot Peeples.

"This question is part of the ongoing investigation," Sgt. Chris Burley told Oregon Live. "At this time, I am not able to comment why the suspect was shot."

Peeples is believed to have held up a check-cashing business and U.S. Bank branch several blocks away from each other.

When officers found him walking nearby after both robberies were reported, they say he refused to obey police commands, walked toward them and reached into his pocket.

Officer Ryan Reagan, who has been with the department 19 years, fired multiple shots and struck Peeples, KPTV reported.

It does not appear Peeples had a gun.

The investigation is ongoing.

He was the sixth person this year shot by Portland police, according to Oregon Live.

Peeples has convictions for second-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission and second-degree identity theft in Pierce County.
