Suspect in Puyallup shooting, car crash arrested after standoff

PUYALLUP, Wash. — UPDATE: The man was taken into custody early Monday morning.

UPDATE: Puyallup police have a man barricaded in an attic in the 2700 block of Briarwood Court North.

People are asked to stay out of the area.

Around 9:40 p.m. Sunday, police said they believe the man is the second suspect in the shooting early Sunday morning. The SWAT team arrived on scene shortly after 10 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY: Multiple reports of gunshots were followed by a car crash and the discovery of weapons and drugs.

Puyallup police were called to the 250 block of South Meridian Street at about 5 a.m. Sunday for a report of shots fired Sunday.

Several residents of an apartment complex and nearby senior living community reported hearing gunfire and several people screaming in the parking lot.

Callers to 911 said a vehicle was seen leaving the apartment complex toward 27th Avenue Southeast.

An officer found the vehicle in the area of 27th Avenue Southeast and 7th Street Southeast and tried to stop it, but it fled at a high rate of speed.

A short police pursuit went through several areas in southeast Puyallup and then the car crashed at 23rd Avenue Southeast and Forest Green Boulevard, where two occupants of the car fled the crash scene.

An Auburn K-9 unit tracked down one of the two suspects in a wooded area nearby. The second suspect was not found.

Rifles and a large amount of a narcotic and were found in the vehicle, according to police.

The suspect who was captured by the K-9 was not hurt in the crash, but was bitten by the K-9 and was taken to the hospital.

There was also evidence found at the inital scene that a weapon had been fired in the parking lot.

Officers are continuing to patrol the area for the second suspect, who has been described as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s.

Police said he would likely have a lot of scratches from fleeing through brush and trees, and that he was taking off some of his clothes as he ran.

Anyone who sees a suspicious man in the area is asked to call 911.
