Memorial held for Lynden police chief

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A public memorial was held for Interim Lynden Police Department Chief Michael Knapp Wednesday afternoon.

Knapp died from his injuries on Nov. 6, a day after he was hit by a car while crossing the street at 5:15 p.m. Troopers say the car that struck Knapp did not have its headlines on.

The memorial was at Bellingham Christ the King Church, 4173 Meridian Street.

According to the Bellingham Police Department, Knapp served in the US Army, was a special agent in the FBI and served as the police chief at several Whatcom County agencies.

Knapp was the chief of the Ferndale Police Department from 20015 to 2016.  He then served as the interim police chief for the City of Blaine. Knapp was the interim police chief for the Lynden Police Department when he was killed.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been set up at People's Bank.  Donations can be made to the Chief Michael Knapp Memorial Fund at any People's Bank location or at the Lynden Police Department.
