Police: Man with stolen sawed-off shotgun arrested after reported robbery of coffee stand

(Bellingham Police Department)

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham police booked a 20-year-old man into the Whatcom County Jail Wednesday after he reportedly robbed the Cordata neighborhood Cruisin Coffee drive-thru at gunpoint using a stolen sawed-off shotgun, according to the Bellingham Herald.

A witness called 911 just before 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 and reported seeing an armed robbery at the coffee stand located in the 300 block of Calluna Court, Lt. Claudia Murphy told the Herald.

The witness, who was at the drive-thru window, reportedly told police she saw a man wearing a mask and carrying a gun, come around the corner and point it through the window and that's when she pulled forward and called 911.

Murphy told the Herald the woman working at the coffee stand told police when the man appeared at the window and pointed the sawed-off shotgun, she fled through the back door, fearing for her life.

The masked man, later identified as Angel Rosso, was seen on surveillance video reaching through the stand's window removing $305 from the register, according to the Herald.

After further investigation, investigators noticed inconsistencies in what the witness told them and what the video showed, police said.

Murphy said the witness didn't seem alarmed nor surprised by the gunman and the video showed her looking directly at him; the gunman was seen running away opposite of the direction the witness reportedly directed officers.

Murphy said the witness told officers she went to a fast-food restaurant by herself right after the robbery, while surveillance video from the restaurant showed an adult in the passenger seat beside her.

Police interviewed the witness a second time on Wednesday, and she identified Rosso as the man who robbed the coffee stand and said she drove him to the scene, Murphy said.

Murphy said no action was taken against the witness because of her cooperation.

Officers arrested Rosso in front of the Police Department.

Murphy said after getting search warrants police found the clothing Rosso wore and the sawed-off shotgun he used in the robbery, which was listed as stolen in a Whatcom County Sheriff's Office case.

Rosso was booked for investigation of felony harassment, third-degree theft, first-degree robbery, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of an unlawful firearm.
