Pedestrian killed in crash with car near Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Northbound State Route 539 was closed for several hours after a pedestrian was hit and killed just south of Smith Road early Wednesday.

Washington State Patrol said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about a pedestrian walking in and out of traffic being nearly hit by cars before they were fatally struck north of Bellingham.

Troopers said the driver who struck the pedestrian showed no signs of being impaired.

The reason why the pedestrian was in the road is under investigation.
