MONROE, Wash. — The Monroe School District closed Fryelands Elementary School after smoke filled the building Thursday morning.
School officials first said classes would be delayed for two hours, but later closed the school after Snohomish County firefighters said they needed more time to clear residual smoke out of the building.
It was determined the smoke came from a malfunctioning motor in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
Officials said the building needed to be thoroughly ventilated and cleaned so students and staff could return Friday.
