Police search for person wanted in connection with arson at middle school in Marysville

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Officers with the Marysville Police Department are asking for the public’s help in identifying a person wanted in connection with an arson.

Police said around 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 1, officers and fire crews responded to a fire at Cedarcrest Middle School, located at 6400 88th Street NE.

Arriving officers said a small portable building, a dumpster and a trash can were all on fire.

Police said the portable building was a total loss and school officials estimated the damage at $72,000.

The damage to the dumpster was estimated to be at $900, police said.

“Additional cost associated with repairing fire and smoke damage to surrounding portables has not been determined yet,” police wrote in a news release.

According to police, no staff or students were on campus at the time of the fire.

Police said all of the power and water had been cut off from the portable building because it was scheduled to be removed from the property later in the day.

Several adjoining portable buildings sustained smoke damage that will result in additional costs to the Marysville School District, police said.

After a preliminary investigation, the Snohomish County Fire Marshall determined the fire to be arson.

Police said video showing the portable building and dumpster burning was recovered and several witnesses at the scene were interviewed.
