Everett police search for suspects in weekend shooting

Everett police say they’re searching for the people responsible for a shooting that wounded two people Sunday morning in the 2600 block of Oakes Avenue. The police say four cars were hit by the gunfire and one homeowner told KIRO 7 that a house was also hit.

This all happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday. Neighbors say the spray of bullets put them all in the line of fire.

The shooting occurred as a party took place on the same block, according to Brian Orkney who lives on Oakes Avenue.

“You know honestly with the size of the party ...it was only a matter of time.”

Everett police say a 23-year-old man and 17-year-old male turned up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. Police also said there may have been 50 or more people at the party.

Orkney is frustrated by the shooting but is more frustrated with the crime that is a regular presence in the area.

“The shooting is kind of a one-off. It's the first one we've had on this block since I've lived here. It's mostly the drug problem....that's the part about that's the worst. It's just like a constant everyday thing.”

Orkney said his tenant's car was hit and several others on Oakes Avenue appeared to have been damaged by bullets.

Police say four cars were hit and they say they recovered lots of shell casings Sunday.

Kurt Nicholson lives on Oakes Avenue and also said certain crimes have proven to be a nuisance, but this is the first time he’s seen a shooting outside his front door.

“It makes us think twice about living downtown here now,” he said.

Everett police said officers had responded to noise complaints about the party. Nicholson says he saw the police break up the party after the shooting.

“It was pretty intense. It was like watching a movie. The cops showed up, they had the house surrounded, they had them come out with their hands up.”

Kaja Knight also heard the gunshots that she said sounded like fireworks. She said neighbors have dealt first-hand with the cops trying to track down criminals.

“Someone is running from the cops and they run through their house...Run through their house in the front door out the back door... like whoa!”

Knight said until last weekend, crimes usually didn't end with gunfire.

“Gunshots -- that's a whole new level of scary we're experiencing now.”

Everett police are still searching for the suspects. Anyone with information is urged to contact them.
