Everett launches electric scooter pilot program

EVERETT, Wash. — Starting Friday, people in Everett will have a new mode of transportation to try.

Electric scooters that can be rented by the minute are being dropped across the city for a three-month pilot program.

Lime, the company behind them, says the e-scooters are becoming a trend across the state. Tacoma and Spokane have them, and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan also wants to try e-scooters in the city.

There's going to be 100 scooters at key spots around the city as the Fisherman's Village Music festival gets started for the weekend.

The scooters cost $1 to unlock and 25 cents a minute to use.

"You just want to stand and get someplace. If I'm in a dress or heels maybe I won't want to ride a bike, if it's hot out, maybe I don't want to ride a bike,” said Lime spokesman Jonathan Hopkins.

Lime is banking on the fact that many people also will find the scooters a cheap and fun option.

The scooters don't have docking stations, but Lime says it will move scooters that are improperly parked, according to an agreement with the city of Everett.

Lime is having an event Friday morning with Everett city leaders. Some have expressed concern about safety of the scooters and their riders.
