Dry weather allows for first improvement to US 2 after rain delays

The Washington State Department of Transportation finally completed its first repair and improvement to Highway 2 between Lake Stevens and Everett over the weekend.

The full closure happened as dry weather allowed for new waterproof coating and asphalt to be laid between Ebey Slough and the SR 204 interchange, among other rehabs.

Rain stopped four previous closures from happening.

WSDOT said, “Applying the material when there’s a hint of moisture voids the warranty for the waterproof coating, and nobody wants that.”

Now with more closures expected for the $11 million project, drivers will need to navigate the detours and WSDOT Project Engineer Mark Sawyer said, "We need them to keep planning ahead and finding different ways to get around because we still have five more closures scheduled this summer."

WSDOT wants the public to know that they have 2.5 miles of improvements to go, with closures scheduled for the following dates, depending on the weather:

•    July 20 - July 22
•    August 3 - August 5
•    August 10 - August 12
•    August 17 - August 19
•    September 7 - September 9

The time for those closures is set from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. the following Monday.

For those wanting information in preparation for the closures, the agency has information on its website for drivers.
