Bear removed from Mt. Vernon neighborhood

(Mt. Vernon Police Department)

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A bear thought to be the “Island Hopping Bear” was found roaming around early Saturday in a Mount Vernon neighborhood.

Police said they were called to the 700 block of East College Way for a report of a black bear.

Additional reports indicated the bear was headed south to East Fir Street until police tracked the bear and found it up a tree in the 400 block of North 17th Street.

After officers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife came out, they tranquilized the bear and caught it in a tarp.

WDFW officers said the markings on the bear suggest he is the bear that has been making rounds in Island, San Juan and Skagit counties.

Officials said the bear will be released back into the wild.
