A new baby orca was born to the Puget Sound J-Pod over the weekend, confirmed officials with the Center for Whale Research.
This is the fourth calf born in three months.
Naturalist and researcher Jeanne Hyde of Maya’s Legacy Whale Watching captured images of the newborn calf near Active Pass in British Columbia Monday afternoon.
"We were assuming we had only the J16s," recounts Hyde. "And as they passed in front of the boat I saw a small calf surfacing next to J16 and said, 'there's the baby.'”
The calf brings the endangered pod’s population to 81.
