Legendary Detroit News columnist Jerry Green, who covered the first 56 Super Bowls, dies at 94

Long-time Detroit News columnist Jerry Green died Thursday, according to the Detroit News. He was 94.

Green was most known for being the only reporter to have cover the first 56 Super Bowls. Green and retired Newark Star-Ledger reporter Jerry Izenberg shared that accomplishment until 2020, when Izenberg bowed out.

Green's streak ended in 2023. In January, he announced he would not attend Super Bowl LVI. At the time, Green called the streak an "honorable" achievement.

Green was a legend in Michigan. His career started with the Associated Press in 1956. He joined the Detroit News in 1963 and remained with the paper until retiring in 2004. Green, however, remained with the paper as a columnist, and still attended and covered the Super Bowl every year.

Green reportedly considered ending his steak in 2021, but the allure of seeing Tom Brady play in the Super Bowl with a new team convinced him to go. The NFL made sure to accommodate Green in recent years and pushed for Green to continue the streak, according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News.

During his career, Green wrote eight books, the majority of which focused on Michigan teams. He was voted the Michigan Sportswriter of the year 10 times and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
