Woman's body found by kayakers on Lopez Island

LOPEZ ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — A group of kayakers discovered the body of a woman on a remote part of Lopez Island in the San Juan archipelago.

San Juan County Sheriff Ron Krebs says the kayakers found the body on Saturday on the south shore of the island, between Ice Berg Point and Watmough Bay, in an area that is reachable only by boat. Krebs says the body appeared to have been there for a while, and it wasn't clear if the woman had fallen from the cliff above or washed ashore.

The remains were recovered by boat and sent to the Snohomish County medical examiner for an autopsy.

The sheriff says no one has been reported missing in San Juan County. The woman's age and identity remain unknown.
