2 dead in collision on SR 702

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A crash involving two vehicles on State Route 702 in Pierce County resulted in the death of two people Saturday afternoon, Washington State Patrol Trooper Ryan Burke said.

The crash happened at about 12:50 p.m. and blocked SR 702 at 8th Avenue South.

A woman and a child were airlifted to Madigan Army Medical Center, but they died, authorities said.

Troopers said a beige car, with a woman and child inside, was traveling north on 8th Avenue and then tried to cross SR 702 when a truck that was going westbound on SR 702. Witnesses told troopers that the car just pulled into the path of the truck.

The car’s passenger side window was missing and had several strips of clear tape across it, authorities said. Coupled with the bad weather, it is possible that the driver could not see out of the “makeshift window.”

Troopers said the two people inside the truck were not taken to the hospital and were uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.

An earlier version of this story stated that the two people in the truck that were taken in the hospital were uninsured. This information came from a WSP tweet, which was later corrected to say “uninjured” rather than “uninsured.”
